CANADA GETS READY TO WELCOME THE WORLD

Vancouver, British Columbia will be the host for the XXI Olympic Winter Games, February 16-28, 2010. Andrew Podnieks has produced a coffee-table book in association with Hockey Canada and VANOC to celebrate the occasion.

ZURICH STUNS BLACKHAWKS TO WIN SECOND VICTORIA CUP

The Zurich Lions stunned the Chicago Blackhawks to win the second Victoria Cup by a 2-1 score at the Hallenstadion in Zurich on September 29, 2009. The previous night Chicago trounced HC Davos 9-2 but were outhustled by a more ambitious Zurich opponent when the trophy was on the line. The game also featured a mixed officiating crew, one referee and linesman each from the NHL and Europe. In 2008-09 the Lions became the first Swiss team to win the European championship (Champions Hockey League).

THE UNBEATABLE MARTIN BRODEUR

The next installment of the young adult series of Canadian biographies features goalie Martin Brodeur. This year he is likely to achieve the three greatest records in NHL history: most games played, most wins, and most shutouts. This book is made special by the fact that Martin's father, Denis, took all of the photographs, from the time Martin first put on skates at age three right up to this past season. MONTREAL CANADIENS CELEBRATE CENTENARY

The 2008-09 season is the first phase of Montreal's 100th anniversary celebrations. To mark this event, Honoured Canadiens is a lavish book profiling in words and images the 54 members of the Hockey Hall of Fame who have been associated with the team (44 Players, 10 Builders). RANGERS WIN FIRST VICTORIA CUP

The New York Rangers defeated Metallurg Magnitogorsk, 4-3, in the first Victoria Cup game, on October 1, 2008 in Bern, Switzerland. The NHL representatives trailed 3-0 late in the second period to the Russian champions of Europe before rallying for a win with just 20 seconds left in the third period. This game was the final event of the IIHF's 100th anniversary which is documented in a new book written by Andrew Podnieks and Szymon Szemberg. Click here to see the book.

RED HORNER INTERVIEW 1996

"It was more than ten years ago, but I once had the pleasure of interviewing Red in his apartment near Yonge and St. Clair in midtown Toronto. His was a comfortbale and open place, and I remember the first thing I saw when he opened the door was his gold coin from the 1932 Stanley Cup, the one that team owner Conn Smythe gave to every player from that team as a lifetime pass to the Gardens. Horner was the biggest player of his era, a bruising defenceman who led the league in penalty minutes for eight straight seasons, a remarkable fact in itself. He was also team captain..."

THE COMPLETE HOCKEY DICTIONARY
One of the highlights of the fall season will be the release of The Complete Hockey Dictionary , the most comprehensive study of the language of the game. The dictionary will include more than 10,000 entries, from the 1800s and earlier up to the present day. IIHF 100th ANNIVERSARY

From September 2007 to September 2008, the IIHF will be celebrating its 100th anniversary. The culmination of events will take place in Quebec City and Halifax in May 2008 when Canada hosts the senior World Championship for the first time.
